I've been working fulltime for 10 years for american companies, I'm now entering into consulting and teaching and helping design and review systems design for scalability. This was an important part of my job at Google for success of many applications launched successfully. I.e., how do one write successful, high performance, highly scalable web services? It is a way of thinking and it can be learned. But to do it on your own, you'll not be ready when your service takes of, therefore it's important to know some basic design principles and how to apply them to your problem at hand.
